What Is Skinamarink
- Hazy
This experimental supernatural horror film hit theaters on July 25th, 2022, and since then anyone that’s seen it has had a big opinion of it. People either hate it or love it. This movie is about two kids who are stuck in a home without their parents. After a while the windows and doors go missing and the kids are left in the dark by themselves. Skinamarink is so controversial because of the choices the director made. Using Different camera angles and artistic choices to make an eerie and unpredictable experience you can’t help but feel like you’re one of the children, and you can’t help but feel helpless.
This movie is completely different from any other horror film that’s come out, and I believe it’ll stay that way for a while. Kind of like how the Blair Witch Project will always be known as one of the first found footage films in horror history. No matter if everyone loved it or not, The Blair Witch Project was unique at its time and sparked the found footage trend. I believe this movie will do the same.
The Director, Kyle Edward Ball, was a YouTuber that made a channel based on his viewer’s nightmares. Many of his videos show the same style of storytelling as the movie I reviewed. One of his biggest videos was called “Heck”, and from that single video, Skinamarink was born. If you’re a subscriber of his channel then you’ll likely love this 1 hour and 40 minute long movie. If you aren’t a fan of analog horror (a genre that has taken platforms like YouTube by storm) then you’ll hate this movie and I wouldn’t recommend it.
In the Movie review Page, I’ll pick apart this movie in three different ways, the Cinematography, the Storytelling and the Acting. I’ll talk about the pros and cons. I’ll discuss the things I think that worked and the things I think didn’t. Then I’ll end it with my overall opinion of the movie. Which side will I land on? Which side will you be on? Will this film make its mark on horror history as something to remember or something to forget?
